Take Pride in America SchoolsThe Take Pride Schools program was launched in the fall of 2005 to introduce a new generation to volunteerism and create future stewards of our public lands. To be designated as a Take Pride School, a school must commit to participating in one Take Pride volunteer event each year benefiting public lands. Participation can be by an entire school, a class, or even an after-school club. Projects must be on public lands (public schools included!), promote Take Pride's message, and benefit public use of public land. Email us descriptions of your project along with photos of the event for Take Pride newsletters and website spotlights! The Take Pride Schools Program now offers teachers a Take Pride School Kit to enhance service-learning nationwide.
Take Pride School Spotlight
As part of the ceremony, 6th grade teacher Mrs. Amelia Davis, brought two students from her schools Talented and Gifted (TAG) program; Jose Mendoza Duarte and Billy Kennedy III. Hyattsville Elementary School has been a Take Pride in America School for two years. Each year students, teachers and parents participate in Gorgeous Prince George’s Day. They plant trees, shrubs and bulbs in an effort to beautify the school grounds. In addition, students from the TAG program pulled weeds and planted native Maryland plants to protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The students took a trip on board a skipjack to learn more about bay conservation, pollution, and the habitat of animals and plants on the Chesapeake Bay. They also displayed a “museum” research project in the school’s media center to increase student awareness of the beauty, problems and environmental importance of the bay.
